The stranger albert camus cover5/11/2023 ![]() ![]() The theme of prototypical existence and essence is a useful guide to The Stranger inasmuch as the novel clearly reflects Camus’s concern at the time with various atheistic existential motifs, such as the absurd nature of human existence, alienation from self and others via stereotyping, and the basic unavailability of essentialist answers (such as Christianity) to the question of meaningful life. Objects, stereotypes, and essences, however, are exact opposites of the human type of being to the extent that they are frozen in a fixed and inert state. ![]() Their existence is open to the possibility of choice and change, a project in the making. 1 Humans have and make a history for themselves. The distinction is that between the freedom of human beings and the thinglike nature of objects, stereotypes, and essences. Which is the real Meursault?Ī useful guide in this search is the existentialists’ own distinction between existence and essence. Is he an absurd hero or a dangerous psychological type? There are clearly two personifications in the novel: the Meursault of Part One, an embodiment of sensualism and carpe diem, a hedonist possessing minimal self-reflection and the Meursault of Part Two, a condemned criminal, a heinous killer-in the eyes of society at any rate-whose existence has been converted into a series of stereotypical categories. ![]() One of the most enigmatic characters in modern literature is Meursault of Camus’s The Stranger. ![]() John Valentine, Savannah College of Art and Design ![]()

Goodbye things by fumio sasaki5/11/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() Humans weren’t meant to pay attention to so many things at once. Why does this matter? Because our old-fashioned brains are totally overwhelmed with the amount of information we consume and the things we need to care for. Sasaki notes throughout the book that while the world has drastically changed over the past 50,000 years with industry and technology, our minds haven’t adapted as quickly. Goodbye, Things: Best Takeaways Human beings are like 50,000 pieces of hardware With just a few pieces of clothes in his closet and a few dishes in his cabinets, he doesn’t have much to keep track of or clean up after. ![]() There seem to be different spectrums of minimalism, and Sasaki is more of an extreme minimalist than most others I’m familiar with. Read About Why Moms Need Minimalism.Īccording to Sasaki, minimalism has allowed him to have freedom, satisfaction, and experiences he may not have had when he was buried under his belongings. There are many benefits to minimalism, especially for moms (and I’m not being sexist here, studies have shown that women are more affected by clutter and mess than men). Minimalism is having fewer possessions and being intentional with the items you have. You’re probably familiar with the concept of minimalism. Would his thoughts and ideas still be valid for me? I wasn’t sure. There’s just no way my family and I could ever live in a 215 square foot apartment with a mattress on the floor. Right off the bat, I struggled to relate to Sasaki. ![]()

The comfort book book review5/11/2023 ![]() ![]() Not every thought or piece of advice will feel groundbreaking, and a few might even border on cliché, but overall Haig strongly delivers on his promise to wrap the reader in bookish comfort. ![]() It is, as Haig puts it, “as messy as life,” “a collection of little islands of hope.” Each of the four parts is made up of a medley of lists, aphorisms, quotes, short stories, meditations on life, and even the odd recipe. The pleasure the reader gets from this book stems not just from its content, but the way it is structured and broken up into bite-sized pieces that one can dip in and out of, in whichever order they please. It's a pick-me-up when our anxiety gets the better of us and we need a gentle nudge to get back into a positive space again. Packed to the brim with bits of wisdom, coziness, and reassurance that joy and hope can be found even in the most unexpected of places, The Comfort Book is the literary equivalent of a warm hug by a dear friend or a breath of fresh spring air. ![]() One thing can be said for certain about The Comfort Book by the wildly popular English author Matt Haig – it lives up to its name. ![]()

Down under bryson5/11/2023 ![]() ![]() In fact, Australia has more things that can kill you in a very nasty way than anywhere else. ![]() ![]() It is the driest, flattest, hottest, most desiccated, infertile and climatically aggressive of all the inhabited continents and still it teems with life - a large proportion of it quite deadly. It is the only island that is also a continent and the only continent that is also a country. It is the world's sixth largest country and its largest island. Australia is a country that exists on a vast scale. Insofar as I had accumulated my expectations of Australia at all in the intervening years, I had thought of it as a kind of alternative southern California, a place of constant sunshine and the cheerful vapidity of a beach lifestyle, but with a slightly British bent - a sort of Baywatch with cricket.' Of course, what greeted Bill Bryson was something rather different. It was as if I had privately discovered life on another planet, or a parallel universe where life was at once recognizably similar but entirely different. ![]()
